A Letter From Don Lough:

Dear Faithful Friends,

Word of Life founder, Jack Wyrtzen, said long ago, “… it is the responsibility of every generation to reach their generation for Christ.”

For 75 years, God has used Word of Life to help people experience their faith through introducing them to the life-changing message of the Gospel. Now as we look forward to the next 75 years, we believe that the best days are ahead, and like our founders, it is our responsibility to do what it takes to reach this generation with the Gospel.

The new logo and look for Word of Life is the result of much prayer and planning. It is an outward example of our deep commitment to sharing the Gospel with today’s generation in a way that resonates with them. We commit to meeting them right where they are while holding fast to the truth of Scripture that guides us.

Thank you for being a part of our family and for your support of the work God is doing through Word of Life. As we look ahead to the next season of the ministry, our energy is renewed and our purpose remains the same.

I pray you will join us in celebrating what God is doing here and around the world and believing with us for the next 75 years.

In His Service,

Don Lough, Jr., Executive Director

Why did you update your logo?

Our founder Jack Wyrtzen said that “it is the responsibility of every generation to reach their generation for Christ.” When Word of Life began 75 years ago, our founders broke ground in the way they engaged the culture. As we look at today’s changing culture, we remain equally committed to meeting this generation’s needs and sharing Christ in a way that resonates – while holding fast to the truth of the Bible and the values that guide us.

After much prayer, we felt led to take some intentional steps to make sure we’re being the best stewards of this ministry as possible and communicating about Word of Life in a way that’s engaging and easy to understand. Yes, the logo gives us a fresh look, but it is also an outward reflection of our commitment to strategic outreach and reaching this generation with the love and truth of Christ.

Why now?

Throughout Scripture, we see God’s command to reach people where they are. He tells us to be understanding of the times (Romans 13:11; 1 Chronicles 12:32), and to go out and compel people to come in (Luke 14;23). If we’re to obey Him and to minister effectively, we have to be wise in understanding our changing culture and reaching it in a compelling way.

There were many factors that led to us take this step at this point in the ministry. At the forefront was the prompting of God and the sense of urgency we feel to reach our generation. As we look to the 75 years before us and the time ahead, we believe God wants to use this ministry to reach as many people as possible with the truth of His Word. To do this, we must communicate effectively, in a way that is compelling and relevant to the times we live in. This does not mean compromising our values or commitment to the truth of Scripture, but rather intentionally communicating that truth in a way people can understand.

This decision was not made lightly. We spent more than a year in prayer, research and strategic planning to arrive at this decision. We have felt God’s hand each step of the way and believe great things are in store for Word of Life.

Are your ministries changing?

No, we will continue to offer some of the most exciting camps around, create engaging curriculum and events, provide in-depth biblical training at the Bible Institute and send missionaries around the world to share the love of Christ. Our goal is to better communicate how all of those ministries work together to help people experience their faith.

I have more questions. Who can I talk to?

We would love to hear your thoughts about the new brand and answer any questions you might have. You can email us at director@wol.org.

Why “Experience Your Faith”?

Word of Life is a complex organization with many different opportunities for people of all ages to come to know Christ and grow in their walks with Him. The common thread in all of them is our commitment to helping people experience their faith. Whether someone is not a believer, a new believer or a long-time believer seeking opportunities for growth, Word of Life creates unique experiences that allow for people to hear the Gospel and grow in their faith. We hope that no matter what aspect of Word of Life you experience, you feel the presence of God and grow closer to Him.

Is the mission changing?

Not at all. We remain deeply committed to reaching the world with the Gospel of Christ. Our prayer is that this step will help us become more effective at accomplishing that mission and will energize our staff and supporters with fresh fire to reach the world for Christ.

What other changes are happening at Word of Life?

While you might notice a few small differences in some camp names or messaging, our core mission and the Word of Life experience remain the same.

This is awesome. How can I get involved?

As we look forward to this new chapter in our ministry, we would love to have you be involved in our work and growth! We greatly appreciate your prayers as we seek the Lord in this exciting time. There are many different ways to help, from sharing the exciting news on Facebook or Twitter or donating to support the ministry financially.

Our Principles

We seek to glorify God through these principles

We are committed to the Scriptures as the source and foundation for ministry.

We are committed to fulfilling the Great Commission by boldly proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ and challenging people to respond.

We are committed to the intentional process of teaching and influencing others to become more like Jesus Christ.

We are committed to reaching youth whose culture constantly changes with biblical truth that never changes.

Statement of Faith

We believe…

The Scriptures

We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are verbally inspired of God, and they are without error in the original writings, and they are the supreme and final authority for faith and life.

The Grace of God

We believe that all who by faith receive Jesus Christ are born again of the Holy Spirit, therefore children of God and eternally saved, and that the Holy Spirit dwells within every believer to enlighten, guide, and enable the believer in life, testimony, and service. We believe that God answers the prayers of His people and meets their needs according to His purpose.

The Trinity

We believe in one God, Creator and Sustainer of the universe, Who is eternally existent in three persons — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

We believe that God gives spiritual gifts to all believers for the building up of the body of Christ. However, the miraculous sign-gifts of the Spirit, such as tongues and healings, were limited to the early church.

The Deity of Jesus Christ

We believe in the Deity of Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, sinless life, His death to pay the penalty for everyone’s sins, His bodily resurrection, His exaltation at God’s right hand, and His personal, imminent, pretribulational and pre-millennial return.

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ

We believe in the bodily resurrection of the just and unjust, the everlasting blessedness of the saved in Glory and the everlasting conscious punishment of the lost in hell.

The Judgment of God

We believe that all have sinned and are therefore guilty before God and are under His condemnation.

The Call to Living a Holy Life

We believe that all believers are called to a life of separation from all worldly and sinful practices and alliances.

We believe that from the beginning with Adam and Eve, God ordained marriage as only between a man and a woman. All sexual activity outside of marriage, including homosexual practices, is in direct contradiction to God’s Word and His institution of the home.

Our History

Jack Wyrtzen

Co-Founder of Word of Life Fellowship

Since the day of Jack’s salvation, God gave him a hunger for the Word and a burden for people to know Christ. Through Jack’s contagious passion for life and truth, God allowed him to share the message of salvation literally around the world.

In 1933 Jack Wyrtzen helped to form an organization called XBA, or Christians Born Again, a Bible study and fellowship group for men. In 1940 the women’s and men’s branches of the organization reorganized to form Word of Life Fellowship. Jack spoke in many churches and held evangelistic rallies from streets to stadiums.

His preaching sold out both Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium reaching thousands with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The ministry expanded over the air with WBBC and the “Word of Life” radio show. Jack influenced and was friends with many great ministers of his time including Billy Graham, George Verwer, Dawson Trotman, Harry A. Ironside, and the Youth for Christ movement.

In 1946 Jack and Co-Founder Harry Bollback purchased an island property at a heavy discount from it’s previous owners. Jack and Harry felt God calling them to start a camping ministry to young people and the Word of Life Island camp was born. Harry soon left to start the first International ministry of Word of Life, and Jack led the ministry to develop Bible Clubs in local churches.

In 1971 the ministry of Word of Life grew again when the Word of Life Bible Institute was founded to teach students the truths of God’s Word. Today there are Bible Institutes around the world training ministry leaders and teaching people the power and truth of God’s Word.

Over the years, Word of Life Fellowship has been blessed by God to include ministries in 66 countries, camps all over the world, an Inn and Family Campground, and Bible Clubs in thousands of churches world wide.
