RJ’S “God-moment”

(scroll down to donate $25)

If you’ve never used one of our Quiet Time devotionals for your daily Bible study, you may not realize what you’re missing.

It’s literally how R.J. discovered God’s will for his life!

Though R.J. had accepted Christ at a summer camp when he was 12 years old (because he and his brother received a scholarship, by the way!), no one was there to help disciple him about what to do next.

It wasn’t until eight years later that R.J.’s faith was rekindled during his final deployment in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was serving aboard a ship that took him from California to Asia to the Middle East to Africa and finally back to America.

With so many long days at sea, he decided he could begin to fix his life a little by reading the Bible! What began as a self-improvement journey soon became a rekindling of his faith. Between the pages of God’s Word — he met Jesus again and fell in love with Him.

But the more he read, the more he realized there were a lot of things in his life that didn’t line up with Scripture. What I thought was my Christian life really wasn’t very Christian!

That’s when R.J. began praying — God, what is your will for my life? How do I get to be a better Christian? It was a question that burned within him every day — especially as he approached the end of his time in the Marines.

One day, while laying on his bed, R.J. was again asking, God, what do you want me to do?

Just then, the ship hit a wave …

A little red book from the overhead bookshelf plopped onto his chest!

“Wow, God answered my prayer — I guess I need to read this,” R.J. thought. The little red book was something he had picked up off the floor a few months previous, when the guard on duty was about to throw it away. But R.J. had never really read it … until it fell onto his chest!

I read the book expecting to see ‘R.J., you need to do such and such’ — and when I didn’t see that, I was a little disappointed. But what I did find on the last page was something called Word of Life, and I saw they had camps in Florida and New York. A camp is where I first learned of Jesus — so I thought … I need to go back to camp!

That little red book turned out to be a Word of Life Quiet Time devotional from SEVEN years previous … and it is just one of many “God-moments” in R.J.’s life.

After a little research, R.J. did end up at Word of Life where he not only worked at our camp, but attended the Bible Institute, too (thanks to scholarship funds from partners like YOU). He then served on the Student Ministry staff. And now he is a Cross-Cultural Intern headed to Brazil to learn how to reach tribal groups who have NEVER heard the Gospel before!

R.J. even met his wife — Janessa — here at Word of Life. They were married just last year — on November 23!

Now you may not become a missionary or find the love of your life just because you use our Quiet Time this year …

… but I know it will help you get more out of God’s Word!

For me, there’s been nothing with more impact on my faith and maturity as a believer than having a daily time of prayer and Bible study with the Lord — and this little book can help make it a consistent part of your life.

If you want to strengthen your walk with the Lord this year … or if you think this devotional may help a loved one … please just mark the age-appropriate version when you return your 2019 gift to Word of Life today.

The Quiet Time devotional is our most well-known and widely-used resource – and with good reason. A year from now, you’ll be able to look back and see how you’ve grown — in faith, in love, in knowledge and in good deeds. All because you consistently spent time with Jesus.

Will you renew your commitment to the Lord … to His Word … and to whatever He may want you to do with Word of Life today? I don’t know of anything more important as a believer than beginning the new year with a commitment to studying God’s Word.

Thank you in advance for standing with us to reach and disciple many more young people like R.J. and Janessa!
